Iceland volcano hike
tour description
Hiking off the beaten path from the very beginning, the Iceland Volcano Hike will lead you up an ancient volcano that is now clad with fluffy green moss and features some of the most incredible views in Iceland, including panoramic views of Iceland’s highest mountain, Hvannadalshnúkur, and Iceland’s largest ice cap, Vatnajökull.
Climbing steadily, you will hike up the mountain over a variety of landscapes including small streams with sparkling, pure drinking water to fill your drink bottle.
Eventually, you will reach the climb up the steep section to the top where you will be exposed to the most exhilarating steep section of the mountain which has a drop of hundreds of meters below to the glacier at the bottom of the cliff. To prevent a fall and provide confidence you will be connected to a rope for this steep and exposed 100 metres of climbing.
Upon gaining the ridge you will be greeted with a breathtaking panoramic view of the highest volcano in Iceland, Vatnajökull ice cap, five major outlet glaciers and the ocean. You will have plenty of time for photo stops along the hike, as well as having lunch on the highest point. After lunch we continue our journey along and down off the ridge to complete a circuit.
The Iceland Volcano Hike is highly recommended for fit adventure seekers and photographers. This is not an established or marked hiking trail, this is a pure Icelandic wilderness adventure!

The physical aspect to the tour
This is a physical tour that is suitable for those who are accustomed to hiking or exercise. The hike involves walking within a dynamic environment and therefore the route that we take changes frequently due to environmental developments. The hike does involve walking over terrain that is not a formed path. This terrain is often challenging as it involves steep loose gravel, loose rocks and boulders. The route that we take may be wet and muddy and your shoes may become wet and muddy as a result.
Mountain hiking is physically demanding and requires a high level of fitness in order to be able to safely and comfortably enjoy the activity. If you have any medical issues such as recent injuries or surgeries, history of dislocations, or any other conditions please contact us to discuss the feasibility of the tour. Please refer to the terms and conditions for more details.
